Interests Convergence. Be sensitive to where you see zero-sum game thinking emerge and work to reframe these arguments. Consider reading more literature on the value of diversity. Think about and reflect critically on where your own thinking displays a zero-sum game mentality and do the research to enhance and grow your own perspective.
Know your Role. Be honest with students and yourself about what your role can be in the change processes at your institution. Engage with your DEI office or committee, and offer feedback, insight, and support. Amplify the voices of your students and bring their issues to decision-makers. Help motivated students learn how they can advocate for change within their institutions.
Celebrate “Better” and Keep Working. Don’t be paralyzed by the scope of the work—celebrate the accomplishments that positively impact people’s experiences on your campus, but keep working. The bigger, broader goals (like culture change) will come as the policies, practices, and behaviors of people at the institution better reflect the core values of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
