Creative Teaching in Primary Science
- Roger Cutting - Plymouth University, UK
- Orla Kelly - Dublin City University, Ireland
Creative teaching has the potential to inspire deep learning, using inventive activities and stimulating contexts that can capture the imagination of children. This book enables you to adopt a creative approach to the methods and content of your primary science teaching practice and confidently develop as a science educator.
Key aspects of science teaching are discussed, including:
- planning for teaching and learning
- assessing primary science
- cross-curricular approaches
- the intelligent application of technology
- sustainability education
- outdoor learning
Coverage is supported by illustrative examples, encouraging you to look at your own teaching practice, your local community and environment, your own interests and those of your children to deepen your understanding of what constitutes good science teaching in primary schools.
This is essential reading for students on primary initial teacher education courses, on both university-based (BEd, BA with QTS, PGCE) and schools-based (School Direct, SCITT) routes into teaching.
Dr Roger Cutting is an Associate Professor in Education at the Institute of Education at Plymouth University.
Orla Kelly is a Lecturer in Social, Environmental and Scientific Education in the Church of Ireland College of Education.
'This book combines argument and evidence about the importance of creativity in teaching and learning with ideas for classroom activities that go beyond the usual run of science topics. Yet these experiences are essential if we are to achieve the aims of developing thoughtful young people who care for the environment and for their own and others’ well-being.'
A good resource for those teaching or assisting with science in the National Curriculum. I particularly liked the links to outdoor education and primary science.
A comparatively slim book which is easy to dip in and out of. This book is a very useful as a reflective teaching tool for any primary practioner or subject leader. Although the book is called ‘Creative teaching in primary science’, it picks up some really key issues of the moment such as sustainability, outside learning and health and well-being. This book is mainly theoretical with relevant research and further reading at the end of every chapter along with some very practical web links to resources that would be helpful in the classroom or to develop whole school policies.
the book is bitty and therefore only a few sections are being selected for reading by students.
This was a very interesting read which provides for teachers a good overview of creativity in the primary setting.
This was an easy to read text that combined theory and practice. The ideas for creative teaching proposed by the authors were relevant and easy to apply.
A useful book for students hoping to embark on an initial teacher training course.
This is an excellent book for the PGCE primary science course which is up to date and current yet supports our creative agenda.
Please can it be made available as an e-book?
More Suited to Initial Teacher Training but a wonderful book regardless
Very readable, very practical and much needed. I found Chapter 10, Sustainability and Primary Science and Chapter 11, Teaching Science outside the classroom, particularly relevant to my course. Also Chapter 12, The Science of Health and Wellbeing, very useful. Overall a delightful book on teaching science.
