New competition for members of the Irish Association for American Studies

Adam Matthew sponsors new American Studies competition with collection access and £500 prize

(Marlborough, UK) Adam Matthew are pleased to announce a new essay competition in partnership with the leading association on American Studies in Ireland, the Irish Association of American Studies (IAAS). The essay competition is aimed at postgraduate students, early career researchers and independent researchers in the field of American Studies.

Essays should be between 3000 and 5000 words in length and relate to a topic covered by any one of Adam Matthew’s North American collections. The deadline for submissions is Friday 15th January 2016 and applicants must be members of the IAAS to enter.

The winner, who will be announced at the 2016 IAAS and BAAS Joint Annual Conference at Queen’s University Belfast, will be awarded with £500 cash, one year’s access to an Adam Matthew digital primary source collection of their choice, and will be invited to submit a further essay to contribute to users of this chosen collection.

Irish Association for American Studies
The IAAS was founded in 1970 to promote American studies in Ireland. The founding members included Alan Graham (Queen’s, Belfast), Denis Donoghue (UCD; now NYU), Peggy O’Brien (TCD; now UMass Amherst), and Tony Emmerson (Ulster). Over the decades we have supported successive generations of students and scholars in the universities and colleges across the island in their postgraduate and postdoctoral work and as they set out on their academic careers in American studies.

We are a constituent member of the European Association for American Studies (EAAS) and our current EAAS board representative is Dr Philip McGowan (QUB). All of our members are automatically members of the EAAS, receive the EAAS Newsletter and Bulletin, and are encouraged to attend the biennial EAAS Conference. In 2012, the EAAS gathered in Izmir, Turkey, and the last EAAS conference was held in The Hague, Netherlands in 2014. A copy of our Constitution can be found here.
