“The advantages of this text are its approachable scale and ease of reading for introductory students. The tone and breadth of this text is very appealing, yet at the same time it’s not a simplification of core topics.”

Allen Salo, University of Maine at Presque Isle

“I think the attention and memory chapters are the best. Concepts are thoroughly described in a concise way.”

James Hoelzle, Marquette University

“This book covers the essentials in a straightforward, no-nonsense manner at a very reasonable price. It's an excellent value.”

Joanne Dufilho, Brevard College

PRAISE FOR PREVIOUS EDITIONS

"Ronald T. Kellogg's Fundamentals of Cognitive Psychology is a very informative and user-friendly introductory textbook for students and general readers alike. This is a book that I would recommend to general readers and undergraduate students alike."

Robert J. Belton, PSYCHCRITIQUES

PRAISE FOR PREVIOUS EDITIONS

"Kellogg lucidly presents the basics of what historical and contemporary psychological science has taught us about the workings of the human mind. Students will enjoy learning from this book."

Elizabeth Loftus, University of California, Irvine

Not appropriate for the psychology course where I teach. A book very focused on neurosciences and our course is psychotherapy focused.

This book is very useful and informative for Psy. undergrad students. I will continue using this book for the next semester as well.

A very good book generally for undergraduates studying cognitive psychology. It covers the essentials of the course and gives a good introduction for students in general. This certainly is not over simplified however still makes reading easy.

  • A greater emphasis on the neuroscience of cognitive processes in every chapter is supported by double the number of color plates in the book’s color insert.
  • New citations expand coverage of topics, including the discovery of individuals with Highly Superior Autobiographical Memory, the role of prospective memory in airline pilot errors, the neural mechanisms involved in the suppression of traumatic memories, the cognitive neuroscience of the teenage brain in relation to risk taking and decision making, and the difficulties of multitasking.
  • New applications of cognitive psychology to everyday life—including such topics as the risks of driving while talking on a cell phone and how recent findings on memory retrieval can improve study skills—are woven into the text narrative, creating a cohesive, accessible reading experience for students.
  • New pedagogical features include chapter-opening learning objectives and boxed learning activities in each chapter.
  • Expanded and new Learning Activities have students actually perform cognitive tasks rather than just read about them.
  • Each chapter now closes with a set of Questions for Thought to encourage critical thinking.

KEY FEATURES:

  • With its focus on the "essentials" of cognitive psychology, the book does not bog students down in tangential or esoteric material.
  • Integrated coverage of neuroscience is enhanced by a four-color insert of 16 color plates, which include brain images (PET and fMRI) and cognitive tasks that students can explore.
  • Concrete, practical applications of cognitive research are woven into the next narrative, creating a cohesive, accessible reading experience for students.
  • Learning Objectives, Learning Activities, and Questions for Thought in every chapter encourage active learning.
