How is communication research evolving in the digital age?
How do technologies such as social media, blogging, and texting affect the way communication and media research is conducted? Launching as a four-volume set, The SAGE Encyclopedia of Communication Research Methods covers a range of theories and methodologies used in communication research as well as trends influencing the future of the field.
“Much like communication between persons represents a dynamic process, academic study and methods reflect that same dynamic process,” writes Editor Mike Allen. “This encyclopedia provides some insight and understanding of the possible content and methods of such investigations and a first step to understanding many of those approaches.”
The encyclopedia contains more than 700 entries by key figures in the field. The entries cover every step of the research process, from the development of research topics, questions, and literature reviews to the selection of best methods for analyzing research results to publishing research findings in traditional and new media outlets.
The encyclopedia also addresses contemporary issues facing those in communication professions, such as the influences of globalization on research, the use of new media methods such as email and texting to collect and analyze data, and the challenges and opportunities related to studying multi-media environments. Additionally, it examines issues related to accountability, copyright, confidentiality, data ownership and data security, privacy, and aspects of conducting an ethical research program.
The encyclopedia includes a glossary, detailed index, chronology of the field, and a thematically organized Reader’s Guide to help readers explore topics in depth. References, further readings, and cross references are also included with the entries to aid further research. View The SAGE Encyclopedia of Communication Research Methods website for more information about the encyclopedia and its key features.
