Philip C. C. Huang is a professor of history and was founding director of the Center for Chinese Studies at the University of California, Los Angeles from 1986 to 1996. He is the author of Liang Ch’i-ch’ao and Modern Chinese Liberalism (1972), The Peasant Economy and Social Change in North China (1985) (Fairbank prize), The Peasant Family and Rural Development in the Yangzi Delta, 1350-1988 (1990)(Levenson prize), and Civil Justice in China, Representation and Practice in the Qing (1996).
